Responsibility
When you enter the McNair Scholars Program, you are entering a nationally recognized program devoted to increasing diversity in situations of higher learning. As a member of such a driven and goal orientated program, you are expected to be the same. The summer research experience is a wonderful opportunity, but it is also challenging and requires an extreme amount of patience, diligence, and persistence. The McNair Staff strives to provide each scholar with all the help and guidance they need, but as a scholar, you will have your own responsibilities. As a McNair Scholar, you will be expected to:
- Attend all scheduled workshops and events
- Maintain a GPA of at least 2.7
- Meet regularly with McNair Staff
- Participate in all required activities
- Meet regularly with your faculty mentor
- Complete at least one research project
- Present your research, either at the Undergraduate Research Conference, at another McNair conference in the country, or at a professional conference in your discipline
- Publish your research paper, either in our annual SIUC McNair Scholars Journal or in a peer-reviewed journal in your discipline
- Notify McNair staff of all graduate school acceptances, rejections, and financial packages
- Maintain contact with McNair staff after you graduate from SIUC
